Pioneering Products - Made by 3M – Halogen-free Wiring

A passion for innovation characterizes the 3M world. Drawing on a basis of over 40 technology platforms, we are constantly creating new products, solutions and applications to make life easier and safer for our customers. Halogen-free materials for wiring and cable enhance human safety and system security many times over without degrading the mechanical or electrical performance of the wiring. PVC insulation for wires and cables can release dioxide vapors, smoke and hydrochloric acid in the event of fire, leading to severe health damage. Read more

Continual Research and Development
Occupational health and environmental safety are key drivers of our corporate activities. Thus, our offer includes a comprehensive range of cables employing halogen free insulating materials as a substitute for the polyvinylchloride (PVC) materials, which have come under critical scrutiny. Cable insulation made of PVC may release dioxin vapors, smoke and hydrochloric acid when subjected to fire, which can lead to serious damage to health. Moreover, the corrosive soot released can cause considerable damage to property and nearby equipment.
Cables employing halogen-free materials increase the safety of people and equipment by several factors without compromising the performance of the cable with respect to both mechanical and electrical characteristics.

When used in sensitive areas, such as public buildings and facilities, or rail vehicles, the requirements cables and conductors must meet with respect to protecting general safety are very stringent. In addition to being free of halogens, they must also be flame retardant and self-extinguishing, and must not contribute to spreading of the fire.

Our products unite and meet all of these requirements.

“Using halogen-free cables is always a good choice when there are concerns about fire hazard, safety and toxicity.”
The flat ribbon cables of the HF365 Series and the round conductor flat cables of the HF 759 and HF 659 Series are ideal for use as internal cabling inside devices, components and instruments. They have a conductor pitch of 1.27 mm, and all 3 variants of the stranded conductor cables are suitable for IDC termination, for example, with 3M plug connectors. The halogen-free cables of the HF759 Series are unjacketed round conductor flat cables, while the cables of the HF659 Series additionally feature double shielding consisting of a metal foil and copper mesh.

The conductors of the cables can be easily separated from each other, thus providing increased design flexibility for cable harnesses. The broad operating temperature range from ‑40°C to +105°C, and the availability of many different conductor counts and various roll lengths offer developers versatile freedom of design, for example, for uses in:

  • Control systems
  • Power utilities/reactors
  • Transport and traffic applications
  • Aerospace applications
  • Telecommunications, data processing and signal transfer systems
  • Public buildings and facilities

The range and diversity of the 3M portfolio is unique worldwide.

Characteristics and Properties

  • HF365 Ribbon Cable
  • Jacketed round conductor flat cable, double shielded (HF659) or unshielded (HF759)
  • 1.27 mm conductor pitch, AWG 28
  • Stranded conductors
  • All cable versions suitable for IDC termination
  • Conductors can be easily separated
  • Broad operating temperature range from -40°C to +105°C
  • Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH) in compliance with IEC 61034-2:2005
  • Low toxicity in compliance with NF-X 70-100-2:2006

The broad range of halogen-free cables will soon be extended by further products. These will include a twisted pair cable, a shielded unjacketed ribbon cable, a 1‑mm conductor pitch ribbon cable and a shielded round cable with separate conductors. These products will, of course, also be suitable for IDC termination and available in many conductor counts.

Halogen-Free Twin Axial Cables
Entirely new options for data cable routing with the added benefits of improved thermal management, increased system density and increased overall performance  are provided by the new halogen-free 3M SL 8800 Series of Twin Axial Cables. These innovative shielded ribbon cables are distinguished above all by a small bend radius and their high-end signal performance.

The special shielded design ensures very low, resonance-free attenuation up to 20 GHz and enables transmission speeds of 1 to 25 Gbps to be achieved. These cables can even be folded at several places with only very little variation of impedance.
