Infineon: XMC4500

With XMC4000 Infineon combines its leading-edge peripheral set with an industry-standard ARM® Cortex™-M4 core, resulting in a power pack for energy-efficient industrial applications.

XMC4500, the first product generation of this novel microcontroller family, delivers the brainpower for a variety of industrial applications facing high innovation pressure at decreasing development cycle times. It is dedicated to enable highly energy-efficient products with industrial interconnection capabilities. Infineon’s in-depth microcontroller know-how, demonstrated over the past decades in a number of well-recognized CPU kernels and peripherals, guarantees the best real-time performance in the industry, now coupled with all benefits of an industry standard CPU core.

The configurable peripheral set inside the XMC4500 allows to set-up the controller according to the specific use cases in the various corners of the customers’ application. In order to fully benefit from this flexibility Infineon is now offering the third generation of DAVE™, Infineon’s industry-proven development environment. Eclipse-based DAVE™3 incorporates free development tools and an autocode generation engine that allows to benefit from a pool of pre-developed, pre-tested SW components. These so-called DAVE™Apps range from low-level drivers up to application-level algorithms and allow the SW developer to concentrate on the truly innovative algorithms in his application, being greatly released from standard work and positioned to save on precious development time.

Infineon XMC Software and Tools

The XMC4000 family is the ideal migration path from the XE166 series to a 32-bit architecture to handle applications that require more performance. In addition to the existing XE166 tool landscape XMC4000 is supported by the broad range of SW packages and tools broadly available for the high performance 32-bit ARM® Cortex™ M4 -architecture.

To complete commercial SW tool solutions Infineon unveils with DAVE™3 the next generation of DAVE™(Digital Application Virtual Engineer).

DAVE™3 is a free toolset that makes it easy to develop application SW based on predefined and tested SW components called DAVE™ Apps. DAVE™ Apps cover a wider range of use case: from all kinds of peripheral drivers, like PWM, SPI, CAN or ADC Apps, middle ware components like TCP/IP, USB, File system or GUI, Application abstractions for motor control or automation up to complete configurable embedded applications.

The DAVE™3 eclipse based toolset can be downloaded free-of-charge from www.infineon.com/dave. The heart of DAVE™ 3 is the DAVE™ Apps Manager to download and configure the DAVE™ Apps from the web and the DAVE™ Code Engine to generate the application SW including conflict free HW initialization and pin assignment. The generated code can be compiled with a free ARM® GNU compiler and an integrated HLL debugger allows downloading and debugging the application SW. A specific data visualization plug can visualize application data and allow specific SW control from a dash board. Also commercial tools and SW can be connected or included into the new DAVE™3. With DAVE™ 3 embedded SW development has never been easier and faster.

XMC Application Kit

The Hexagon Development Kit is a modular, expandable application board platform for the XMC4000 family. A number of satellite boards connected to the central CPU-Board enable fast prototyping of specific applications such as motor control with resolver/encoder circuitry, industrial automation via Infineon’s ISOFACE chipset or any kind of power conversion like solar inverters.

A HMI satellite card provides SD/MMC, audio and touch sense functionality along with an OLED display. Ethernet, CAN and RS485 functions can be added via a COMMUNICATION satellite card.
