FCI: The miniaturization trend within 'demanding' Wire-to-Board applications
As a result, several miniaturized ranges of “modular board to board” interconnect have emerged. Coming from the 2.54mm market standard, evolving towards 2.00mm pitch and now more and more systems with 1.27mm products are offered, for applications where board space is limited.
FCI has always tried to stay ahead of this, by frequently adding new products to it’s extensive “modular board to board” portfolio. FCI focus: ‘demanding applications’: thus building on proven connector technology like dual beam contact systems and supporting operating temperatures up to 125C.
For ‘Wire to Board’ applications, the miniaturization trend has always been limited to flat ribbon cable systems, driven by the automotive industry. Several 1.27mm pitch interconnect systems are available, based on the reliable, simple IDC technology.
Discrete wire interconnect is a different story: designers tried to stay away from available 1.25mm pitch crimp to wire systems, since these were mainly designed for the Consumer industry. And by default, consumer grade interconnect do not meet simple ‘demanding’ criteria like operating temperature, coplanarity and dimensional stability (non-Nylon housings!).
To meet this growing need for small pitch Wire to Board interconnect, FCI has introduced a 1.25mm wire to board system meeting the ‘demanding application’ needs. Meaning: a range of terminals, crimp housings and PCB headers in straight, right angle, surface mount and through hole configurations in a range from 2 to 15 contacts per connector. The additions of this 1.25mm Wire to Board system to the already existing 2.54mm. 2.00mm and 1.27mm pitch board to board and wire to board product portfolio provides customers more options to select from a standard, proven product range.
Unlike many other products for the same applications, FCI’s 1.25mm wtb system conforms to the EU Industry Safety Standard, and the PCB header material meets the halogen free requirements. The products, made from dimensionally stable LCP material, can be operated in the temperature range of -40C to +105C, highest in the 1.25mm WtB industry. Crimping tools are available for wire harness assembly.
