Low-Power Digital Optocouplers with Robust High-Voltage Performance for Hybrid and Electric Vehicles


The new ACPL-K4xT Avago optocouplers are qualified to AEC-Q100 Grade 1 stress test requirements for automotive applications. The devices offer robust working voltage performance up to 1140V, allowing standardization of battery management solutions for mid-voltage car batteries, high-voltage bus and truck batteries, and even future high voltage battery topologies.

The ACPL-K4xT devices are part of the Avago R2Coupler™ family of optocouplers with reinforced insulation for reliable signal isolation, which is critical for onboard chargers for plug-in electric vehicles and other automotive and high-temperature industrial applications. Onboard chargers take in high-voltage, high-current supply to charge quickly, demanding robust isolation of up to 8kV peak transients. The reinforced insulation of the optocouplers meets these stringent requirements, delivering safe electrical signal isolation over a wide operating temperature range from -40 to +125° C. Additionally, the devices’ small surface-mount package meets the 8mm creepage and clearance distance required for high-voltage safety regulations.

The low power consumption of the ACPL-K4xT optocouplers helps prevent battery management systems from draining vehicle batteries. The devices feature no quiescent current and thus do not draw power in the “off” state. Also, the current consumption of both their LED and detector IC can be minimized as low as 1.5mA/channel for low-speed switching operation.

The single-channel ACPL-K43T device and dual-channel ACPL-K44T device each operate at 1 MBd, while the single-channel ACPL-K49T device operates at 20 kBd.

HFBR-2555AFZ is a metal housing optical receiver for SERCOS applications that operates at data rates of 4, 8 and 16 MBd. The metal housing provides a robust design that prevents optical port breakage in the harsh environment with excellent ESD performance. The optical data is transferred between numerical controls and drives via fiber-optic rings, with voltage isolation and noise immunity.

HFBR-2555AFZ is designed to operate with transmitter HFBR-1505AFZ. This part is characterized with 200μm HCS® and 1mm POF cable for wide operating temperature from -40°C to +85°C. Low Power, 1 MBd Digital Optocouplers

Avago´s low power 1 MBd digital optocouplers, ACPL-W50L (single channel in stretched SO-6 footprint) and ACPL-K54L (dual channel in stretched SO-8 footprint) provide significant power savings when compared to other optocouplers and are suitable for applications like industrial inverters, feedback elements in switching power supplies and programmable controllers.
They have low forward drive current (IF >3mA), providing a high current transfer ratio (CTR>93% min), they support a wide supply voltage (2.7V to 24V) and extended temperature range (-40°C to 105°C). In addition to low power consumption, the ACPL-W50L and ACPL-K54L provide high signal isolation and high voltage insulation capability. These optocouplers support 15kV/us common-mode noise rejection (CMR) and are certified to regulatory standards UL 5000Vrms/min isolation voltage and IEC60747-5-5 1140Vpeak working insulation voltage for reinforced insulation.
